What is Social Media?
August 1st, 2007 by Sterling Hager
Social Media is, at its most basic sense, a shift in how people discover, read, and share news and information and content. It's a fusion of sociology and technology, transforming monologue into dialog.
It is an evolving phenomenon that has captivated some, intrigued others, and is feared and underestimated by many.
Strategically making your presence known across various social media networks may seem overly elementary but it involves looking at each category of social media which has a different, sometimes intricate method for effective promotion.
Social media is all around us and will continue to become even more pervasive as the generation that has grown up with the web, video games, mobile devices and text messaging assumes a larger role in business and society.
Using social media techniques, however, is not a cure-all for all marketing and communications challenges. There is much less control than traditional media. Enterprises are likely to receive all sorts of feedback and the tone of discourse can range from very positive to downright ugly and obnoxious.
In a highly viral environment, organizations must respond quickly and don’t have days to craft press releases that go through lengthy legal reviews. The blogosphere and e-communities demand sincere and candid and fast communications – a type of voice in which many corporations may not be accustomed to speaking and which is likely to feel uncomfortable and even scary at first.
