If IT Doesn’t Get It, You Don’t Get IT

Here's an informative item from Heather Havenstein at Computerworld all about the importance of geting IT on board the Web 2.0 train if you hope to railroad the enterprise into letting all aboard via social media offerings.

While not overly critical of establishment IT professionals, the piece nevertheless can leave you with the impression that corporate IT professionals are just being their usual recalcitrant selves. In my opinion, they are just doing their job, which isn't easy. They are held to high standards of enterprise information technology performance and security. It is only natural on their part to worry whether or not free-for-all Web 2.0 technologies will expose the whole system to serious vulnerabilities not contemplated by less technical types. 

Dave and I routinely encounter IT professionals with serious questions and concerns. But invariably, because they really do know their stuff, they not only get it, but they add tremendous value in making the whole social media initiative work better. Calling for an end-around the IT department when it comes to Web 2.0 is a bad idea.
