IBM Employee on Corporate New Media Team Blogs About the Old Guard

The opinions expressed on this blog called Blueprints, which is about Podcasting and Social Media at IBM, are not necessarily those of IBM. The author makes that clear here in the 'About' section.

Still, in the latest post entitled, Social Media - how do you sell it to the old guard, I get the strong impression this writer knows what he or she is talking about and some of what is said seems to have been significantly informed by IBM travels, customers, peers and others.

You should read it if you still have any doubt about the power and reach of social media in today's big corporate world. You should read it if you just can't believe corporations let employees blog freely like this. By 'like this,' I mean Blueprints is not an IBM blog. But there's clearly an IBM look and feel and flavor to the thing, an IBM employee writes it, the name of it is a take off on IBM's nickname, 'Big Blue,' and everyone's OK with that. Reasonable people most often do the most reasonable things, even in the metasphere. But not without mutual trust and a few other core qualities.

Blueprints: plans used to help build new things. Nice name. Good blog. Useful perspective.

    So glad you have noticed my new blog. Yes, IBM has been nurturing and promoting blogging internally and externally for about 4 years now. It has been fascinating to watch the evolution, especially when focusing on the cultural and business approach differences between those who have been with the company since before the launch and those who have joined more recently.

    Same thing goes for our podcasting initiative, wikis and 3D internet explorations. We have kept it slightly viral so as to learn as much as we can from early adopters, but have had massive participation results in podcasting and wikis. Self-publishing has been adopted, supported and encouraged at IBM and I couldn’t be happier. A very cool time to be an IBMer.
